Elite Caribbean Cycling Championships - Barbados 2009

We have all made it to Barbados though we still wait for a single piece of luggage. Ironically it was a carry-on that the airline staff gate checked in New York. Of course it contained a helmet, pedals and shoes. But when it arrives this evening all will be set.

Tomorrow is the time trial and Garth, Flora and Dee will be tackling the 20k course, Garth doing two laps and the ladies one. We checked it out this morning and there are a few road surfaces that leave something to be desired. But the road is the same for all competitors. While one group was scouting the TT route, Geri took Chris on a little road excursion, exploring some back roads of Barbados. Goats, cows (!!!) and dogs all welcomed the boys while Jeff and Arthur sat in the sleek jeep. It's Pitcher's bag we are waiting for but we're sure he will be on the road in the morning.

We stayed in this hotel (Golden Sands) two years ago with the junior squad and it has undergone a significant upgrade since then. The people are the same and that's a plus.

Time for the technical meeting, an annual joy. We'll try and keep it to a few hours. Let the negotiating begin!

Hector Osuna Diaz put together this fantastic video of the recent Jr. CCC races in Bermuda. Team Bermuda was Philip Woolridge, Tre'shun Correia, Ryan Gunn, Marquis Cann, Dominique Mayho, Sophie Adams, Michaela Eberly, Claire Hawley, Izabella Arnold and Hayley Evans. Team managers were Graeme Miller and Simon Parker.

More Bronze For Bermuda

Sophie Adams took third place in the road race today, claiming Bermuda's second medal of the Junior Caribbean cycling Championships. She and Hayley (4th) got away with the eventual winner but we later caught by the strong rider from Curacao who took second place, just two seconds ahead of Sophie. What a great result for both our girls to have claimed prizes in these championships.

More pictures to follow but two happy girls will have to suffice for now.

Hayley Gets Bronze!!!

Hayley Evans took third place in the time trial today, finishing behind riders from Aruba and Curacao and just ahead of our Sophie Adams. It was a great day for Hayley and the entire team as it was the first time any Bermuda junior has won a medal in the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships. We'll see if we can get a comment from her but we may have to wait until the grin disappears.
The boys fared well in their 20K TT with Thomas taking 6th, followed by Aaron in 9th and Philip in 10th. The winner, Quentin Winkel of Curacao beat his own personal record on his home course by one minute and demonstrated that course knowledge can be a big factor. Just wait 'til we host this event next year.
Our "Juvenile" boys did well, with Alex G finishing 9th with Ryan 12th and Tyree at 16th. The heat on the morning was very intense and is a bit of a warning for the road race tomorrow.

This afternoon was spent relaxing in the A/C after a dip in the pool (Tyree demonstrated all of his best Bermuda dives) and lunch, including what must be the standard fare of cyclists in the Caribbean, fried plantains (amongst other things) and chicken.

Wishing you could be here to experience all of the sights and sounds of Curacao and the racing but know that you are as delighted as Nigel and I with Hayley's awesome result.

We're here! The Lido Hotel was ready for us and even has air conditioning. The local cycling federation has been great, picking us up from the airport last night and then driving us to dinner. And today they were back at the hotel to make sure that everything was OK. Aaron's seat post snapped after he had set up the bike and Thomas's rear deraileur was bent so off to a local shop for a seat post and a loaner deraileur for Thomas.

After putting together all the bikes with Philip's expert assistance we set off for a warm up ride a la Geri Mewett with our local guide Daniel. Working on sticking the video here, maybe by this afternoon.

Starting Out To Curacao

We started today with our flight from Bermuda to Miami where we are now 4 hours into our 6 hour layover. It was great to see so many cyclists out on the roads in Bermuda before 6:30 this morning, including Joey Richardson, Mark Lombardi (apparently he flatted) and even Manny Packwood. Jay Donawa was on our flight and he gave some great encouragement to the team. Everyone is really thrilled to be heading to Curacao for the competition.

Here in Miami we're mainly just sitting around and some are learning the basics of card games. In a few hours we get a direct flight to our final destination and hope to be in the hotel and assembling the bikes by 9:00PM. With any luck we might even see dinner.
